TREAT MUM THIS MOTHERS DAY WITH THE GIFT OF LIVE MUSIC

4.30pm till 6.30pm – $35

THE FIR TRIO – Built around Kristina Frazer’s beautiful voice, the Fir Trio features an eclectic repertoire, loosely billed as jazz.  Swing standards, blues, contemporary songs and originals all have found their way into the trio’s repertoire. Kristina and her gorgeous voice lead veteran sidemen Andrew Ireland (double bass, voice) and Andrew Russell (guitar, voice) through their varied repertoire.

Their vocal trio is an outstanding feature of the group and their musical sense of humour infuses every performance.

KANIMBLA STRING QUARTET – Welcome to the Kanimbla Quartet, a string quartet based in the Blue Mountains in Western Sydney and is comprised of Rebecca Daniel, Elizabeth Cooney, Sam Harding and Trish McMeekin. We enjoy performing a wide range of music, from classical repertoire to modern compositions, including local upcoming composers. Our goal is to support our community with music, through both collaboration with local orchestras and choirs, as well as featured performances.
The Kanimbla String Quartet and the Fir Trio are teaming up for a fusion of jazz and classical music’s. Both groups are products of the fertile music scene in the Blue Mtns. and together they produce a big sound with a varied palette of instrumental and vocal colours. The fun and joy of music-making shows through on every phrase as they play through a program ranging from Cole Porter to Leonard Cohen, Lennon/MacCartney to Bach.

Where Song Began’ is a musical celebration of Australia’s birds and how they shaped the world.

Inspired by leading ornithologist Tim Low’s award-winning book, this 50-minute performance explores the Australian origins of song, ‘the birds that can sing’. Such is their evolutionary significance, ‘one may ask whether human music would have reached the heights it has, had the first songbird not sung in an Australian rainforest.’

Accessible for all ages, this work encourages the audience to contemplate the origin of song and the importance of Australia’s rich and colourful bird history. The program includes music spanning 300 years, from Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and J.S. Bach to Arvo Pärt and new Australian works, enhanced by a film of evocative visual projections, and an immersive soundscape.

About the performers: Simone Slattery was a 2018 Churchill Fellow, received a PhD in Music Performance from the University of Adelaide and performs regularly with Australia’s finest ensembles. Anthony Albrecht is an Australian graduate of The Juilliard School’s Historical Performance program and enjoys an international career.

APRIL 12th – THE BEEZ

4.30pm till 6.30pm – ADMISSION $20 – INCLUDES COMPLIMENTARY GLASS OF WINE

The Beez are your favourite record store. You know, the one that went out of business a few years back? Now re-opened in a slightly funkier part of town? Yeah, that´s the one. Come in. Browse. Hmm, quite a selection. Colourful clientele. Knowledgeable staff!

That´ll be Peter D’Elia over there, running the Country, Bluegrass and Americana section, but you´ll also find him moonlighting in the metal and prog rock section. He´s from San Francisco, a demon banjo and dobro picker and singer who also writes some mighty fine tunes.

And over here, looks like the German department – some Bowie, a little Berlin Cabaret and Bert Kaempfert. Deta Rayner, native Berliner – angel´s voice. That bass you´re hearing? It´s accordion – a rare “helicon bass” specimen, one octave lower than what you´re used to.

In the red corner – looks like post-punk, blues and funk-there´s even a little Barry White. Must be Rob Rayner. Like Barry, sings bass baritone and also plays some very tasty, rootsy electric guitar; forsook his native Sydney for Berlin 30-odd years ago. Nice songs over here, too!

Dedicated to diversity – The Beez are a veritable pop-up music shop, coming to a town near you!

APRIL 14th – SPIKE FLYNN (feat Tim Watts) 4.30pm till 6.30pm – ADMISSION $10 – INCLUDES COMPLIMENTARY GLASS OF WINE

Spike Flynn has released two albums of original songs – “It’s alright” and “Rough landing”. Both have been very well received. His first album “It’s alright” reached number 10 on the September 2010 Euro Americana charts. He won the alt-country section of the Tamworth National Songwriting Competition in 2017 and had three songs in the 2018 finals. He will soon be releasing his new album “Just this side of here”. Originally from the Central West of NSW and now based in Sydney, Spike infuses home town/country themes with an urban edge. He is an accomplished finger-picking guitarist in the style of Doc Watson and plays ‘rack’ harmonica. His original songs have a strong Australian presence but with universal themes. He has supported local acts such as Jim Conway’s Big Wheel and international acts including Kristina Olsen, John McCutcheon and Peter Rowan. Spike often performs with the two-piece band the Open Hearted Strangers, playing a mix of original songs, blues and country
